How one bad experience can change perception

I have been a staunch Macbook Pro and Apple product supporter for the last three or four years, recommending them to everyone I know, and spreading the gospel according to Steve.

For the first time that I can remember, I would now hesitate to recommend the new Macbook Pro to those that use large ( 22” and up ) external monitors.

Technical Interlude:

The new Macbook Pros changed their external video port to Mini Display Port instead of DVI. If you don’t have a monitor that has Display Port technology, which only a few ( namely Apple ) monitors do, then you have to buy a $100 adapter from Apple.

End of Technical Interlude:

To put it bluntly, as has been reported by numerous others, the new adapter is just plain awful. It flickers when coming out of sleep, and often times goes completely blurry. To remedy, you have to unplug, and plug back in to the adapter.

I went to the Apple store and spoke with a “Genius” ( don’t get me started on that whole thing ) who told me that they never have these problems with the Apple monitors, and that it was probably my monitor that was the problem. No, it’s not my monitor. The only thing that changed was the fact that I bought a new computer, genius.

The problems with my monitor have completely changed my outlook on Apple as a company. Funny how just one small thing can have such a large effect.
