Why I Am Excited About Apple’s Volume Purchase Program

As a developer of applications that are generally specialized and at times focused on a particular company, it always bothered me that those apps would be available in the general public’s store.

I was really excited to see the news about about Apple’s Volume Purchase Program, mainly because it now facilitates private transactions between developers and buyers.  More specifically, the Custom B2B apps provide the following:

  • Customized user interface including a company logo
  • Specific configurations to support a particular customer’s requirements
  • Features targeted to a limited audience

One interesting (and not so great) part of the platform is that these custom apps require a minimum purchase price of $9.99.  I hope this changes over time so that you have more pricing options as a developer.

In addition to the Custom B2B, the new program supports (as you might expect) the ability to buy apps in bulk.  This is great for companies buying apps for their employees.  The way it works is that each user is provided with a custom url with a redemption code that they can access from their phone and download the app.

As someone who generally works in the B2B space, I am excited to see how this program evolves.
