Maybe I Was Wrong About Chrysler

When the federal government bailed out Chrysler a few years back, I was firmly in the camp that they should have been allowed to die.  Chrysler has been a bad company for a long time, and it seemed like a good time to shoot them in the head and be done.

Lo and behold, today when they released their earnings, there was actually some good news.  They made money last quarter, excepting a $550 million one-time charge to retire the debt to the federal government.  They actually seem to be heading in the right direction, and who doesn’t like the idea of them repaying their loans early.

Maybe I called this one wrong.  It will be interesting to see if they can sustain the pace, but if they actually pull out and return to being a decent car company (ok, become a decent car company) then maybe the government stepping in was not all bad.

Should we have bailed Chrysler out?  If they become productive, does that make it a good move?
