Dented

Below is a picture of my MacBook Pro.  You will notice the dent and the accompanying bubble in the aluminum.  This happened when I was traveling on Monday.  My bag plummeted from a hook about five feet off the ground and, although it was padded, I now have a dent in my machine.

My reaction right after the fall was, at first, to make sure everything still worked.  I plugged in USB devices, and did a full system check.  It had survived the fall.  Phew.  That was remarkable in and of itself.  Then, when I got on the plane and opened it up again, I saw this dent.  I wanted to weep.  You see, although I know it’s just a machine (really I do), this computer is my sidekick.  If you are like me and own a Mac, you get attached to the precision and beauty of your machines.

This is Steve Jobs’ gift.  He made me care deeply about a commodity item.

As I was relating this story to someone the other day, they paraphrased a line from Ferris Bueller where Ferris says “A man with priorities so far out of whack does not deserve such a fine automobile.” There’s probably some truth to it.  I am a touch obsessed.  But, Apple is just that good.

Steve is not dead, and I hope for his family’s sake he can fight through whatever is going on.  Below are two clips that are my favorites (to-date) from Jobs.  Hope you enjoy them.
